5 ideas for a romantic weekend

How many love stories have blossomed in the shadow of the Duomo, on the hills of Fiesole, or with a sweet kiss on the terrace at Piazzale Michelangelo? Too many to count.

Florence is so much more than a monument to Italian art and culture, it’s also a wonderfully romantic city, perfect for a holiday for two at any time of the year. Whether you’re here for a while or just a weekend, there are some experiences you must try during your trip to Florence with your beloved.

The staff at San Firenze Suites & Spa have put together a list of truly romantic places to visit hand in hand with your partner.

Day

1. The Rose Garden

Enjoy a romantic escape into nature, right in the heart of the city: take a stroll or a picnic in the Rose Garden. Situated just below another beautiful spot – Piazzale Michelangelo – this small park is filled with color and a uniquely romantic atmosphere.

The Rose Garden is an unmissable stop in your romantic Florence, thanks to the sweet perfume from the more than 300 varieties of rose, and the special way it slopes downhill offering a breathtaking view of the city.

Enveloped by irresistible perfumes, walking past the charming statues by the artist Folon and the Japanese-style corner, with your beloved by your side, what could be more special?

Day

2. Church of Santa Margherita dei Cerchi

When you think of Florence and a certain literary love story, which couple comes to mind? Our city is where Dante developed his all-consuming passion for his Beatrice, weaving her praises into the masterpiece of the Divine Comedy. Come and discover where that love story began: visit the Church of Santa Margherita dei Cerchi, tucked away in the tangle of streets branching off between Piazza della Signoria and the majestic Duomo.

Tradition has it that it was in this small church that the great Italian poet first met Beatrice, daughter of Folco Portinari. She became the great love, and muse, of his life and here tomb is still here. Sit in the church, enjoy the magic, and get a sense of Dante’s emotion.

Top off your romantic afternoon with an exclusive aperitif in one of the historic cafes in Piazza della Repubblica, facing the old carousel that swings and sings in the center of the piazza.

Day

3. Top-class shopping

Hanging out and shopping can be a fun romantic time for those special couple moments, especially if you’re on the lookout for special gifts for her – or him – or for a new outfit for that anniversary dinner...

After a fabulous carriage ride from Piazza del Duomo, you’ll have plenty of energy to stroll around, popping into some of the top-class shopping Florence offers.

Every small street in the center of Florence boasts numerous small shops and boutiques, but the real fashion quarter stretches between Via Calzaiuoli, Via Roma, Via Calimala and Via de 'Tornabuoni. Take your time and try on some new styles: this is where you’ll find all the major Italian and internationally-renowned labels

Day

4. Sunset trip on the Arno

The river Arno divides the city in two, crossing it at seven historic bridges. Try a new way to experience this lifeline of the city: sail along the Arno at the perfect sunset hour.

Thanks to the group I Renaioli, from May to September you can try out a trip on a traditional boat: this is definitely a different way to experience the city as a couple, but more than anything, it’s uniquely romantic.

The city seems different at sunset, the air is warmer and tinged with gold, reflected in the shimmering waters of this historic river. On hotter days, taking a tour by evening is a more refreshing way to relax as a couple: the stars reflected in the water will cast a spell on you both.

Day

5. A trip to Fiesole

Just a couple of miles outside Florence, up in the hills, stands the aristocratic town of Fiesole. This ancient town, founded by the Etruscans long before the Romans developed Florence, is easy to reach by car, perhaps with an exclusive limousine rented for your special evening. Or you can travel by public transport; one bus line reaches Fiesole from the center of Florence.

Cradled by a sparkling breeze, surrounded by elegant architecture and the light of the stars, the views from here - in the company of your loved one – are priceless. Together you’ll enjoy glimpses of Florentine wonder, surrounded by velvety green hills, open up before you.

This is a romantic show like nothing else in the world, to be enjoyed closely, with a glass of fine Chianti in your hand.
